What are Podcasts?

Podcasts are a way of automatically getting audio files, in this case recordings of Sunday services and other meetings onto your computer. You need to have special (usually free) software on your computer to do this. You can then subscribe to a podcast site, such as this one, and your computer will automatically make sure that you have the latest copies of whatever audio is there available on your PC. We make most of our Sunday morning sevices, and a few other talks, available for download or Podcast. If you have an Apple iPod or similar MP3 player the audio can be transferred to this each time you connect, so you can listen to it when and where you want. You really need a broadband connection to make use of podcasting, which is named as it's a mix of iPod and broadcasting.

If you don't regularaly use an MP3 player and don't plan to listen to any other podcasts on your computer then frankly its not worth bothering with for this site alone, just download any services you want to listen to.

If you do have software, like iTunes, that work with podcasts you need to subscribe to http://www.jones99.f2s.com/pbctalks.xml

If you want to download iTunes you can find it on Apples' website HERE. It is free, but includes a shopping function that will encourage you to buy music! It will also include Quicktime and offer to replace Windows Media Player if you are using a Microsoft operating system. Quicktime is an excellent media player, better in many ways, but you may well want to say "no" to this option if you are used to the Microsoft version.

You will find lots of other sites that make audio files available for manual download or for podcast. These include Holy Trinity Church, Brompton, the home of The Alpha course and some BBC radio programmes.

How Does it Work?

Once you have podcast software it's easy to use. The "how it works" is not complicated either. Podcasting uses a system called RSS "Really Simple Syndication" and a computer lingua franca called XML "eXtensible Markup Language". It's said that this is "push" technology- that the web pushes infomation into your computer. Actually once you've subscribed to a podcast site your computer will "look at" this site regularaly, find the XML page you subscribed to and automatically download- "pull"- the audio files that are published for download there. The XML code for our site looks like This.
